Bosnian Serb wartime military commander Ratko Mladic, arrested in the Vojvodina village of Lazarevo on May 26, was transferred to the ICTY detention facility at Scheveningen on May 31. His trial on charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, whether conjoined with the ongoing trial of Republika Srpska political leader Radovan Karadzic or not, will begin the process of holding Mladic accountable for crimes committed by forces under his command, including the 1995 Srebrenica massacre – already ruled an act of genocide by the Tribunal.
Atlantic Initiative examines:
A recent police strike in the Zenica-Doboj Canton (ZDK) came about as a result of operational problems, which are listed in a detailed investigation of police conduct in that territory. Police officers are striking for an increase in salaries, but it would be naive to think that this is the only obstacle they face in adequately performing their duties. A number of other issues relevant to the efficient functioning of the police service, and subsequently the security of all citizens and their property, remains open. What quality of material and technical equipment do the police have at their disposal? Can the police sufficiently serve the population and respond to more serious threats?
